STROLL: Second Friday on Lancaster Ave

Friday, July 12, 5pm – 8pm. 34th to 45th streets along Lancaster Ave. Shoppers and community members will take to Lancaster Ave for the increasingly popular Second Friday celebration this month. The event fills the sidewalks with sales, recipe samples, live music and art exhibits. This month includes live jazz performances by Kendrah Butler and Nu Vizion at Art on the Avenue at 7pm. Reelback, Inc. will present a screening of “The Original Leads of the Temptation” documentary about the 1991 reunion of David Ruffin, Dennis Edwards and Eddie Kendricks at 7pm in the United Bank Building. That screening costs $5.

Friday, July 12, 6:30-11pm. The Oval, Benjamin Franklin Parkway.  Be there for the first “Friday Flick” series at The Oval, presented by The Awesome Fest. There will be a Reese’s Pieces giveaway and a bike raffle by Wheel Fun Rentals for a brand new, Schwinn Falcon 20″ youth/kids bike. Movie will begin around sundown (~9pm). Free.

LET THEM EAT CAKE: Bastille Day at Eastern State Penitentiary

Saturday July 13, 5:30pm. Eastern State Penitentiary, 2027 Fairmount Avenue. Bearded Ladies, an experimental cabaret troupe, will present an hour-long “completely historically accurate” reenactment of the French Revolution at Eastern State Penitentiary this Saturday. Dozens of French revolutionaries will storm “the Bastille,” aka Eastern State and capture Marie Antoinette (played by Terry McNally who co-owns nearby London Grill and Paris Wine Bar). Antoinette will shout “Let them eat Tastykake!” as the revolutionaries drag her to the guillotine and 3,000 Tastykakes are flung from the prison towers. Napoleon, Joan of Arc, Benjamin Franklin and a life-sized baguette will be in attendance as well. Free.

FEAST: Sidewalk Sizzle & Ice Cream Freeze

Saturday July 13, 10am-4pm. Reading Terminal Market, Filbert Street underpass. Reading Terminal will make the street sizzle this weekend with a combined grilling and ice cream sidewalk party. Enjoy a variety of grilled foods from market vendors – from dollar dogs to pizza and turkey legs, Amish sausages and shrimp skewers – as well as ice cream. The festivities include live music, games and arts and crafts as well. Free.

CELEBRATE: Annual Hispanic Fiesta at Penn’s Landing

Saturday, July 13 & Sunday, July 14. Great Plaza at Penn’s Landing, Columbus Boulevard between Market and Walnut Streets. Enjoy live music and dance performances of all types (salsa, merengue, samba, bachata, mariachi, cumber and flamenco) at this weekend’s Annual Hispanic Fiesta. Authentic Hispanic food and crafts, along with the cast of the new Tio Papi movie will fill the Great Plaza in celebration of Hispanic culture. Young performers will compete in a youth dance competition, and headlining artists scheduled for nightly performances include Tonny Tun Tun and Tony Vega. The event is hosted by the Council of Spanish Speaking Organizations of Philadelphia and is part of the summer-long PECO Multicultural Series. Free. 

WATCH: Walking Fish Family Theatre in Penn Treaty Park

Saturday, July 13 & Sunday, July 14. 7pm. Penn Treaty Park, 1341 N Delaware Ave. Walking Fish Threatre presents Family Theatre in Penn Treaty Park – a two day series of fast-paced, interactive, literature-based performances in this open-air, riverfront setting. The lineup is tailored to children ages two through seven and their caregivers. Free.
