March 26: Philly Flag Day tomorrow | Destination Frankford’s art projects | Moyamensing Place | EMT + Paramedics | Urban form as control

Hey Streeters, here’s your Wednesday Buzz:

Tomorrow is Philadelphia’s Flag Day, a celebration of the Swedish colors and city crest that flies above municipal buildings. The Inquirer reports that tomorrow Partners for Civic Pride will be giving away awards in celebration of the four virtues embodied by the flag – peace, hope, justice, and prosperity.

Generocity checks in on Destination Frankford’s artsy progress. Womrath Park’s winning sculpture proposal, Confluence by Christine Rojek, will go before the Art Commission in May and a new popup gallery has opened on Frankford Ave at Paul Street near the Margaret-Orthodox El stop.

Will a long-vacant lot at Moyamensing Avenue and Moore Street finally be developed? Passyunk Post notes that “Moyamensing Place” is proceeding, with pre-secured variances in hand, to build five rowhouses facing both Moore and Pierce streets, and four fronting on Moyamensing Avenue.

If an ambulance comes for an advanced life support call, we’ll be getting a well-trained paramedic and a more basically skilled EMT instead of two paramedics. The Inquirer reports that lineup meets state standards, and the city says will permit the even distribution of staff. The firefighters’ union is not happy.

How can the physical structure of a city empower or stifle social change? The Atlantic Cities checks in with artist and author Sophie Yanow about her recent book War of Streets and Houses on the ways urban environments exert control.
