What the heck is going on with the Overbrook Farms Historic District? Everything and nothing, apparently. The Historical Commission has been working on creating a local historic district for Overbrook Farms…
Overbrook Farms is roughly bounded by City Avenue, 58th Street, Woodbine Avenue, and 66th Street at Morris Park. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Overbrook Farms is a showcase of turn-of-the-century architectural styles. Its creation, starting in 1893, was a result of the combined forces of planned expansion of commuter suburbs along the rails of the Pennsylvania Railroad and the immense wealth generated by the industrial growth and prosperity in Philadelphia after the Civil War. The neighborhood is bisected by the original Pennsylvania Railroad main line which today is used by Amtrak and SEPTA's Paoli/ Thorndale line. Overbrook Farms maintains the oldest continually operating neighborhood association in America, the Overbrook Farms Club.
