ABOUT PACKER PARK

Packer Park, Named after William Fisher Packer, the former governor of Pennsylvania, is a Neighborhood in South Philadelphia. The neighborhood spans from Broad Street to 20th Street and from Packer Avenue to Pattison Avenue. The area is still referred to as a “park,” even after the grassy area that once covered the land was developed in 1950. The area was originally settled by New Swedish settlers. The area’s Swedish heritage can still be seen in the American Swedish Historical Museum on the southern border of the neighborhood. This community soon became inhabited largely by second generation Italian Americans and remains an Italian American neighborhood today. Unlike many Philly neighborhoods, Packer Park utilizes cul-de-sacs instead of row houses to emphasize the neighborhood's parks while also creating off street parking, such as driveways. Packer Park is one of four Philadelphia residential neighborhoods in the Sports Complex Special Services District and is home to The Novacare Complex, a sporting complex owned by the Philadelphia Eagles.
