Healthy Communities Coordinator Clint Randall gave the Philadelphia City Planning Commission an update on the city's effort to use community planning to help Philadelphians achieve better health.

Randall, who reports both to the health department and the planning department, explained that steps such as ensuring neighborhoods have walkable sidewalks and bikeable streets and access to public transportation and healthy food can make it easier for people to behave in ways likely to help keep their weight in check and reduce the risk of diabetes.

The 18 district plans that are part of the city's ongoing comprehensive planning effort will contain not only healthy community goals, but means of measuring the current situation and progress called Health Impact Assessments, Randall said.
