Gentrification Dangers and Neighborhood Change OpportunitiesPrint Page

February 19, 2009 - 6:00pm - 7:15pm

Following up on last semester's successful Philadelphia Conversations series at PennDesign, we have scheduled four more conversations this spring semester dealing with transit-oriented development, gentrification, urban design, and smart growth.
Each conversation lasts 75 minutes.  For the first 30 minutes, a local expert interviews a national expert about national best practice.  Then, the tables are turned, and the national expert interviews the local expert about the Philadelphia scene.  This is followed by fifteen minutes of Q&A and discussion.  Last semester's sessions were thoughtful and provocative, and this semester's promise to be even more so.

Philadelphia Conversations 2009: Gentrification Dangers and Neighborhood Change Opportunities

John Kromer of Penn's Fels Institute (and former Director of Housing for Philadelphia) will be interviewing Prof. George Galster of Wayne State University, and one of the nation's foremost experts on neighborhood change.  The topic will be Gentrification Dangers and Neighborhood Change Opportunities.  Does neighborhood upgrading have to produce displacement?  Hear what the experts have to say.
