The Next Generation of Green Construction and How to Get There
The potential for presence and profits in the Green Construction Revolution are increasing. In conjunction with the Delaware Valley Green Building Council, The Carpenters’ Company will present a forward look at what will be coming in green construction. With energy and environmental considerations making greater demands on our industry, the future of construction in America will follow the worldwide initiatives in green construction, and those prepared to understand the new demands will be able to seize the opportunities ahead.
Roger Frechette will deliver the keynote address. He will bring international insights of global success in the Green revolution. Mr. Frechette is the Director in charge of Building Services and Sustainable Engineering for the design firm of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP. He is a registered professional and mechanical engineer with 20 years of experience, and a Senior Fellow of the Design Futures Council
Mr. Frechette is currently leading the engineering team for Burj Dubai, planned as the world’s tallest building. He is also working on the Pearl River Tower under construction in Guangzhou, China. This remarkable building is designed as a zero sum energy consumption building. The seventy-one-story structure features integrated wind turbines and other advanced features to give us a glimpse at the future. Those wishing to learn more can visit www.som.com/content.cfm/pearl_river_tower.
His work includes a diverse group of projects, ranging from laboratories, airports, hospitals, academic buildings and corporate offices, government buildings, and museums.
Previous accomplishments include his 2001 design of the National Wildlife Foundation Headquarters Building in Reston, Virginia, voted by the American Institute of Architects as one of the Top 10 sustainable buildings in the United States. He also co-authored The Nantucket Principals, which focuses on the trends and issues that will influence green building and sustainable design in the future. In 2004, Mr. Frechette received the United States Congressional recognition for his work in building sustainability.
In addition to Mr. Frechette’s keynote address, a panel of experts will detail specific initiatives in areas of finance, government, and local best practices. The panel will be moderated by Sandy Wiggens. Panelists include Katherine Gajewski, recently appointed by Michael Nutter as Director of Sustainability for the City of Philadelphia; Jody Roberts, of the Chemical Heritage Foundation to speak on green chemistry; Mark Purcell, President of the Delaware Valley Green Council to detail the constructor’s point of view; Daniel Garofalo, Environmental Sustainability Coordinator for the University of Pennsylvania; Jason Dougherty, Directo of BIM Implementation at Microsol
