Andalusia

Andalusia is a historic neighborhood in Bensalem Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, bordering Philadelphia. The ZIP code is 19020. The area is the southernmost part of the township and of the county. Its boundaries are: Woodhaven road (PA Rt 63) to the northeast, the Delaware River to the east and south, and Poquessing Creek to the north and west. Interstate 95, known locally as "I-95", runs through its southeastern section near the Delaware River. The neighborhood takes its name from the Andalusia estate of Philadelphia financier Nicholas Biddle, now preserved as a National Historic Landmark.

In 1922, the unincorporated village was named Torresdale Manor, after the neighboring Torresdale section of Philadelphia, and some developments in the area are still affiliated with that name.

Today, Andalusia is a middle class suburb, mainly typical of the area. Its grid-style streets contain small single-family homes that date back to the 1920s. Andalusia is also home to many historic buildings, some dating back to the early Nineteenth Century, owned and inhabited by some of Philadelphia's wealthiest families. Architectural styles include Gothic Revival, Romanesque, and Greek Revival. The neighborhood's main thoroughfare, Bristol Pike (US Rt 13, formerly Kings Highway), reveals various homes and churches that have been preserved, while the most esteemed buildings, including Biddle's estate, the Pen Ryn mansion, and State in Schuylkill, are hidden along the banks of the Delaware. Saint Katharine Drexel is buried at the Katharine Drexel Shrine, which is also in the area on Bristol Pike.

The area contains several shopping areas and abuts the Franklin Mills mall. The neighborhood students attend the Bensalem Township School District.

Inquirer: a focus on Phila's hidden sites

Hidden City Philadelphia is a unique arts festival that brings Philadelphia’s best unknown historical and architectural landmarks back to life through original works of art. It runs May 30 through June 28, 2009.

There are many historical and architectural landmarks around Philadelphia that at one time were all important to the city’s neighborhoods, but their significance – and in some cases their existence – has been forgotten over the years, making them hidden to the people who walk, run, or drive by them every day.  Performing and visual artists have created dance, music, sculpture, video, print, and mixed media pieces inspired by the history and architecture of their selected sites to draw attention back to the important people and places forming Philadelphia.

2nd Annual Philadelphia Citywide Cleanup/MLK Day of Service

April 4, the anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is Philadelphia's Annual Citywide Spring Cleanup and Day of Service. Last year's was the largest cleanup day in the City's history - and we want to help make this year's even bigger!

Check out http://www.phillycleanup.com/pages/Home.asp?Section=Home for more information, or contact your local CDC or neighborhood group to get involved.  Here is some contact information for some neighborhoods:

Northern Liberties:

In the morning neighbors can clean their own blocks or join a cleaning team to target weedy, trash-strewn lots and graffiti. In the afternoon we have spring cleaning projects planned at Liberty Lands. To get involved, contact Lara Kelly at trash@nlna.org.

University City:

University City District, in cooperation with the City of Philadelphia, Fairmount Park, CLIP Project and Philadelphia Department of Streets, will assist your block by providing bags, work gloves, and trash/leaf pick up.
